Someone recently asked me “If I live in Evanston, where can I get divorced?” If you want an uncontested divorce in Illinois, and you live in Evanston, then you have a couple options regarding where you can get divorced.
Can I get divorced in Evanston?
If you live in Evanston, you cannot get divorced in Evanston. That’s because Evanston does not have a divorce court.
So I might say that I’m an “Evanston divorce lawyer,” but I won’t be representing you in Evanston.
Can I get divorced in Skokie?
Evanston is in the Second District of the Circuit Court of Cook County, and the Second District courthouse is in nearby Skokie, Illinois. Therefore, if you’d like, you can get divorced in Skokie.
You could call me an Evanston divorce lawyer, but my office is in Skokie. That being said, I handle divorces in the Illinois counties of Cook, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Lake, and McHenry.
Can I get divorced in the Loop, at the Daley Center?
No matter where you live in Cook County, you can filed an uncontested divorce at the Daley Center. The Daley Center is the First District of the Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois. So if you live in Evanston, Skokie, Roling Meadows, Chicago, or the Cook County part of Naperville, you can get divorced at the Daley Center.
Many people want to get an uncontested divorce at the Daley Center because they work in the Loop and will be there anyway – so they don’t have to travel around too much.
Do I have to get divorced in Cook County?
If you live in Cook County, can still get divorced in a different county – if you spouse lives there.
So for example, if you live in Evanston, you can either get divorced in Skokie, at the Daley Center in Chicago, or at the circuit court in the county in which your spouse lives. So if your spouse lives in Deerfield or Highland Park, you can file the uncontested divorce case in Cook County, or in the Circuit Court of Lake County, in Waukegan, Illinois.
